Why does TigerWing use only OX long pimples rubber?

In table tennis, long pimples rubber without sponge — commonly called OX or single-sheet long pimples rubber — often feels unusual because it has no sponge layer to absorb impact or provide rebound. The ball strikes the blade more directly, so the contact is faster, the sound is crisper, and the thin, soft pips bend and recover more dramatically. As a result, the rubber can create highly deceptive spin reversal: when an opponent loops underspin, the return may come back as topspin or no-spin.

Because there is no stable sponge support, the return path is often less conventional, producing a floating, sinking arc and an extremely short dwell time that makes it difficult for the opponent to judge the contact point. In general, the thicker the sponge, the weaker the deceptive effect of long pimples rubber. The thinner the sponge, the stronger the reversal effect becomes. Among all long pimples rubber setups, OX is usually the most deceptive.

  • Strong deception and sinking trajectory: When using the opponent’s pace, the return tends to be flatter, heavier, and more unpredictable, creating maximum visual and tactile confusion.

Fast transition with RSB

  • Integrated feel: A core feature of TigerWing is the ability to switch seamlessly on the backhand side between long pimples rubber for variation and inverted rubber for Reverse Shakhand Backhand (RSB).
  • Less thickness, cleaner feedback: Using OX keeps the racket lighter and thinner, which gives the player a sharper, more immediate feel when flipping the racket face or adjusting the blade angle. The transition becomes cleaner, faster, and less cumbersome.

Looking at it within the TigerWing system, there is another core reason.

In the TigerWing playing style, the main value of long pimples rubber is not to make it easier to launch attacks, but to maximize its unusual ball behavior, reduce speed, and create strong spin differences. Once sponge is added, it may increase bounce and make the ball easier to spring out, but it usually weakens these core characteristics.

It is true that adding sponge can improve offensive potential. But in the TigerWing backhand system, offense is mainly handled by the RSB inverted side, while the long pimples rubber side is meant for variation, disruption, and serve-return control, not as the primary attacking weapon. In addition, sponge reduces the clarity of this tactical division after the switch: RSB is responsible for active opening, counterattack, fast blocking, and quick ripping, while long pimples rubber is responsible for breaking rhythm and creating spin contrast. 的确,加上海绵会提升可进攻性但翼虎反手体系里,进攻主要交给 RSB 反胶面完成,长胶面的任务是变化、扰乱和接发球控制,不是承担主攻。而且,海绵会降低切换后的战术分工清晰度,RSB 负责主动上手、反攻、快拨快撕,长胶负责制造节奏断裂与旋转反差;单胶皮长胶更能把这套分工拉开。
